Motor development, the physical intelligence of the body, is built through movement, manipulation and exploration. It cannot be developed through screen interaction.
Fine motor skills, the precise small-muscle control required for writing, dressing, eating and tool use, develop progressively from birth through age seven, with the most critical period between 18 months and 5 years. The development follows a predictable sequence: palmar grasp → pincer grip → tripod grip → functional writing grip. Each stage requires practice with real physical objects.
Toys that best develop fine motor skills in under-5s include: stacking and nesting toys (pincer grip, precision placement), threading and lacing (lateral finger movement, hand-eye coordination), simple puzzles (piece manipulation, spatial problem-solving), construction toys (multi-finger coordination), and play with small figures and natural objects.
Touchscreens require only a blunt finger swipe, the simplest possible motor interaction, requiring no precision, no grip development, and no consequence of imprecision. They do not develop fine motor skills.

Gross motor development, the coordination of the large muscles governing posture, balance, locomotion and object manipulation, is the physical foundation of all later learning. Research consistently shows correlations between gross motor development and cognitive ability, attention, reading and mathematics. The theory of embodied cognition suggests that this is not coincidence: the brain builds understanding of the physical world by moving through it.
Children under five need to walk, run, climb, jump, throw, catch, push, pull and carry. Every one of these activities is simultaneously motor development and neural development. The UK CMO recommends at least 3 hours of physical activity per day for under-5s. Most sedentary screen time is a direct displacement of this.

The pull-along toy is one of the most developmental objects in the early childhood canon, and one of the most underestimated. For the newly walking child (12–36 months), pulling a toy develops: gait stability and confidence, spatial awareness (object in relation to body), cause-and-effect understanding (I move → it moves), hand-eye coordination, proprioception, and bilateral coordination. The toy that wags its tail or bobs its head adds a layer of sensory feedback that deepens engagement and extends play duration.
