What Imagination Actually Is

Imagination, the capacity to generate representations of things not present, is the foundation of creativity, problem-solving, empathy and planning. It is not a mystical gift. It is a neural capacity, built through repeated practice of symbolic thinking. The primary laboratory for symbolic thinking in early childhood is pretend play: this block is a car; this wooden fox is my friend; this box is a house.

When children engage in pretend play, they are exercising the representational systems of the prefrontal cortex, the same systems used in all later creative, planning and perspective-taking activity. Research by Paul Harris at Harvard has shown that children's engagement with counterfactual thinking (what if?) in play directly correlates with later creative capacity and flexible reasoning.

The Open-Ended Toy: Why Less Means More

The most imaginative toy is the least pre-determined one. A wooden fox can be a pet, a wild animal, a character in a story, a vehicle, a jumping obstacle, a sleeping creature, or a hundred other things. Its function is whatever the child decides it is. This open-endedness is precisely what activates imagination, the child must supply the narrative, which means exercising the imaginative capacity.

Pre-programmed toys, those with buttons, sounds, lights and scripts, supply the narrative for the child. This is the equivalent of doing their creative homework for them. The more a toy does, the less the child has to. The TIMPANI research by Trawick-Smith confirms this: the simplest, most open-ended toys generated the most creative play by a substantial margin.

Creativity and Screen Time: What the Evidence Shows

Multiple studies show an inverse relationship between heavy screen use and creative play quality in under-5s, but the mechanism is displacement, not harm per se. A child who has just watched an hour of fast-paced content shows significantly lower engagement with open-ended play immediately afterwards. The passive stimulation of screen viewing appears to temporarily reduce tolerance for the slower, generative experience of creative play. The answer is sequencing: real play first, screens if at all later.
