Three separate mechanisms connect screen use with sleep disruption in children. First, blue light, emitted by all screens, suppresses melatonin production, delaying sleep onset. Second, stimulating content activates the stress-response system, making physiological arousal incompatible with sleep initiation. Third, habitual screen use before bed establishes neural associations between the bedroom context and stimulation, undermining the conditioned response to sleep cues.

The evidence-based bedtime routine for under-5s is remarkably consistent across paediatric sleep guidelines worldwide: a warm bath, quiet play with calm physical toys, one or two picture books read aloud with conversation, and a consistent set of sleep-cue rituals (dimmed lights, the same phrase, the same toy).
