Children are biologically designed to learn outdoors. Here is what decades of research says about nature, outdoor play, and the developing child.
The natural environment offers stimulation that no indoor setting can replicate: variable terrain, unpredictable weather, living things, scale, risk, sensory richness and genuine mystery. Research consistently shows that outdoor play, particularly in natural settings, produces unique benefits across physical health, attention restoration, wellbeing, motor development, and connection to the living world.
Rachel and Stephen Kaplan's Attention Restoration Theory proposes that natural environments restore directed attention by activating effortless, involuntary fascination, the same attentional state that children call "just looking." Children who spend regular time outdoors show better sustained attention in indoor tasks, reduced stress hormones, and improved mood. These benefits appear within minutes of nature exposure.

The "cotton wool culture" of over-protected childhood is itself a developmental risk. Research by Ellen Sandseter shows that children seek out six types of risk in play, heights, speed, dangerous tools, dangerous elements (fire, water), rough-and-tumble, and getting lost/hidden, and that this risk-seeking behaviour is neurologically driven. Suppressing it produces heightened anxiety and reduced risk-assessment capacity. Appropriately managed outdoor risk is the developmental medicine that builds resilience, physical confidence and executive function.
