Language is not taught in the first five years, it is grown, through interaction, narrative, and play. Here is what the research shows, and what it means for every parent.
Betty Hart and Todd Risley spent three years following 42 families, recording every word spoken to children from birth to age three. Their findings, published in 1995 and replicated multiple times since, changed the field of early childhood for ever. By age 3, children from the most language-rich homes had heard approximately 30 million more words than children from the least. This gap predicted vocabulary size, reading ability, IQ and academic achievement at age nine with extraordinary precision.
The words that drive development come not from flashcards or educational apps, but from narrating the day, talking through play, reading aloud, and responding to children's communication. A toy on the floor is an invitation to language: "Look, the fox is going round the corner. Where's he going? Can you make him come back?"

The video deficit effect is the most replicated finding in infant media research: children under two do not learn language from screens the way they learn it from live human interaction. On-screen characters cannot respond contingently, they cannot adjust to what the child says, notice when the child is confused, or follow the child's point of interest. Language is built through contingent interaction: you do something, I respond; I say something, you react. This is the "serve and return" of language development, and it requires a live, responsive human, not a pre-recorded one.
A major study by Radesky found that parental smartphone use during mealtimes reduced child-directed speech by 40%. This single finding is more consequential for language development than almost anything else in the screen-time literature: it is not what children watch on screens that matters most, it is what adults stop saying when they look at them.

Open-ended toys, wooden animals, simple figures, blocks, vehicles, generate far more language than closed toys. A toy with a single function produces a single script. An open-ended toy produces an infinite number of stories, questions and conversations. When a 2-year-old plays with a wooden fox, they name it, narrate it, ask questions about it, and hear parents respond with new vocabulary. When a 2-year-old presses a button that says "blue!" in a cartoon voice, nothing comparable happens.
