Touch, taste, sound, sight and smell are not distractions for a baby, they are the entire educational programme.
In the first twelve months, the brain builds its sensory maps, the neural representations of how the world feels, sounds, looks, smells and tastes. These maps are built through direct sensory experience, not observation. A baby who grasps a smooth wooden rattle and a rough wooden block is building different sensory representations, different neural pathways, different understandings of the physical world. This process, called sensory integration, is foundational to all later cognitive development.
Jean Ayres, who developed the theory of Sensory Integration in the 1970s, showed that the brain's capacity to organise sensory information underpins attention, motor learning, emotional regulation and academic learning. The first year of sensory-rich play is the neural infrastructure upon which everything else is built.

Sensory play does not require specialist equipment or expensive resources. It requires: natural materials (wood, fabric, water, sand, grass, leaves), varied textures and temperatures, movement (bouncing, rocking, rolling), and a responsive adult who narrates the experience ("cold! smooth! rough! heavy!"). The naming of sensory experience, the moment a parent says "ooh, that's cold!" as a baby touches an ice cube, is simultaneously sensory development and language development.
