Attention is built, not born. Here is what the research says about screens, real play, and the development of focus in the early years.
Sustained voluntary attention, the capacity to focus on a self-chosen task, is not present at birth. It develops over the first five years, driven primarily by play. The research of Adele Diamond and others shows that sustained attention and inhibitory control (the ability to resist distraction) are aspects of executive function, built through self-directed play in which the child must sustain their own engagement without external direction.

Fast-paced screen content, rapid cuts, constant novelty, high stimulation, habituates the attention system to a pace of stimulation that real-world activities cannot match. A child who watches 30 minutes of fast-paced content finds it harder to sustain attention on slower-paced activities immediately afterwards. The Lillard and Peterson (2011) study showed that just 9 minutes of a popular fast-paced cartoon produced significant executive function deficits compared to drawing or watching an educational programme. The implications for children with attention difficulties are particularly significant.
This is not a diagnosis of ADHD, the vast majority of children showing attention difficulties have not been assessed and may simply be experiencing the normal developmental effects of high screen exposure and insufficient real play. Before seeking assessment, the evidence strongly supports a period of increased real play, outdoor time, and reduced screen use.
