The deeper point in Gill's work is that risk and benefit have to be weighed together, not separately. A purely risk-led view of a climbing tree sees only the fall. A balanced view sees the strength, the planning, the self-knowledge and the joy on the way up, and asks whether the small chance of a scraped knee is worth abolishing all of that. When adults assess only the downside, the answer is always no, and childhood gets smaller by one more tree. His argument is not that children should face genuine danger. It is that a graze is not a tragedy, and treating it as one teaches children something far more corrosive than the graze itself: that they are fragile, and the world is not for them.

The principle is to let the child operate at the edge of what they can currently do, rather than safely inside it, and to let small, instructive consequences happen: the tower that falls, the jug that spills, the knee that meets the grass. It depends what the word covers.
