Who Jean Piaget is

Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist and the founder of constructivism, the school of thought that says children do not passively receive knowledge from adults but actively build it for themselves. He spent his career watching young children closely, mapping the stages their thinking passes through, and asking the question almost nobody before him had taken seriously: not whether children know less than adults, but whether they think differently.

It is hard to overstate his shadow. Nearly every modern idea about early learning, from hands-on nursery classrooms to the design of educational toys, stands on ground Piaget cleared. His work is carried forward today by the Jean Piaget Society, an international scholarly body devoted to the study of knowledge and development. When a nursery teacher describes play as how children make sense of the world, she is speaking Piaget, whether she knows it or not.

What the evidence says

Piaget's central claim is deceptively simple: children construct knowledge through action on objects. A baby does not learn what a ball is by being told. She learns by gripping it, mouthing it, dropping it, watching it roll under the sofa and reappear. Each action is a small act of construction, a brick laid in the building of a mind. For Piaget, intelligence is not a quantity poured into a child from outside. It is a structure the child assembles from the inside, and the raw material is physical experience: grasping, stacking, pouring, knocking down, fitting together.

This is why his framework is called constructivism. The child is the builder. The adult's job is to supply the site and the materials, not to do the building. And the implication that follows is the one parents most need to hear: hands-on manipulation is not a charming preliminary to real learning. It is the learning. A child fitting wooden shapes into a sorter is doing the foundational engineering on which every later abstraction, counting, reading, reasoning, will eventually rest. Thought, in Piaget's account, begins as internalised action: a child can only mentally rotate a shape because her hands rotated a thousand real ones first.

Piaget also mapped how play itself develops, and the map has three great territories. First comes practice play: the pure, repetitive exercise of new abilities. Shaking the rattle again. Dropping the spoon again. Stacking and toppling, stacking and toppling. Nothing is pretended and no rules exist; the child is running her new machinery for the joy of running it, and strengthening it with every repetition. Second comes symbolic play, when the child discovers that one thing can stand for another. The block becomes a phone. The teddy is poorly and needs a doctor. An entire invisible world is conjured and managed, which is an astonishing cognitive feat dressed up as a tea party. Third come games with rules, when children become able to hold a shared structure in mind, follow it, and care about it: taking turns, moving the counter the right number of spaces, accepting that snakes go down. Each stage builds on the one before. The pretender needed years of practice play first; the rule-follower needed years of pretending. You cannot skip a floor of the building.

What this means for under-5s

The first implication is about how learning happens at all. If knowledge is constructed through action on objects, then a young child's environment needs to be rich in things to act on: objects to grip, stack, sort, pour, post and knock over. A screen, however cleverly designed, offers almost nothing to the hands. It can show a tower falling; it cannot let a child feel the moment of overbalance in her own fingers. On Piaget's account, watching is not a substitute for doing, because the doing is where the construction happens.

The second implication is about timing. The three stages of play are a development sequence, not a menu. A fourteen month old who does nothing but bang, drop and stack is not behind; she is exactly where the building work currently is. A three year old lost in pretend kingdoms does not need hurrying toward worksheets; the pretending is the bridge to everything after. And a child who keeps losing the thread of a board game is usually not being difficult. The capacity to hold rules in mind arrives when the earlier floors are built, typically as children approach school age, and it arrives more solidly for the years of hands-on play underneath it.

A note of honesty: developmental science has moved on since Piaget, and researchers today argue about his timings and how rigid the stages really are. But his two core insights, that children build knowledge through action and that play matures in a recognisable sequence, have survived a century of testing remarkably well, and they remain the working assumptions of early years practice across the world.

How it looks and feels in practice

Piaget's staircase of play is something you can furnish, stage by stage, and the traditional toy box does it with almost eerie precision.

For the practice play years, the materials are the simplest and the oldest: a rattle with real weight in a small fist, a beech stacker whose rings thunk satisfyingly onto the post, blocks cool and smooth against a toddler's palm. Watch a one year old with a stacking tower and you are watching practice play in its purest form: ring on, ring off, ring on, tower over, shriek of delight, begin again. Every repetition that looks identical to you is, to the builder, another load-bearing course of bricks. The best educational toys for this stage are not the ones that do the most. They are the ones that let the child do the most: grasp, stack, post, sort, repeat.

Then, sometime in the second or third year, the same blocks quietly change jobs. The tower becomes a castle. The peg dolls acquire names and grievances. A wooden ark is suddenly a stage for floods, rescues and animals who refuse to queue nicely. This is symbolic play arriving on schedule, and the toys that serve it best are the ones with no script of their own: simple figures, animals, vehicles and worlds that wait for the child's story rather than telling their own.

And finally, rules arrive. There is a particular evening in family life, somewhere around the fourth or fifth birthday, when a child first plays a whole board game properly: waits for her turn, counts her own moves, loses with only moderate scenes. The click of a wooden counter on a board, the ceremony of setting up, the shared agreement to obey the dice: this is Piaget's third stage made visible at the kitchen table. Common questions

My toddler just repeats the same action endlessly. Is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong; something is being built. Repetition is the signature of Piaget's practice play stage, in which children exercise a new ability until it is solid. The fortieth drop of the spoon feels different from the first to the child doing the dropping: grip, release and trajectory are all being refined. The phase passes on its own, and the abilities it builds become the floor for pretending and, later, for rules.

Can I speed my child through the stages with the right products?

Piaget's answer would be no. The stages are built, not unlocked, and each is constructed out of long experience in the one before. What you can do is feed the stage your child is actually in: graspable, stackable objects for the practice years, open-ended figures and worlds for the pretend years, simple turn-taking games when rules begin to hold. Rich material at the right floor beats expensive material at the wrong one.

When is a child ready for board games?

It varies child by child, but the signs are consistent: she can wait for a turn without dissolving, follow a simple shared structure, and accept an outcome she did not choose. For most children this assembles itself around the fourth or fifth year. Start with the shortest, simplest games, bend the rules generously at first, and treat early walkouts as information about the stage, not the child.

Does watching educational video build knowledge the way Piaget describes?

Not in the same way. Piaget's mechanism is action on objects: the child's own hands testing weight, balance, fit and consequence, with the results felt directly. A screen can present information, but it cannot be gripped, stacked, posted or knocked over, so the constructive loop between hand and mind never closes. For under-5s especially, an hour with blocks and a jug of water does work that no amount of watching can replicate.
