When schools feel behind, the tempting move is to trim playtime and add instruction: more minutes at the desk, surely more learning. Pellegrini's evidence says this is counterproductive. Pellegrini's school research concerns children of school age, and much of the evidence on recess is associational rather than a controlled experiment, so it pays to be honest about what it can and cannot prove. But the direction of travel matters enormously for parents of younger children, because the battery he describes is smallest, and drains fastest, in the very young. If a seven-year-old needs a recharging break between lessons, a three-year-old needs one between almost everything.
For a parent of an under-5, three implications follow. First, stop reading restlessness as failure. A toddler who melts down halfway through a quiet activity is very often not being defiant; their attention battery is flat, and the fix is movement, not more insistence. Second, sequence matters. The order "run about, then sit down" works with a young child's design; "sit down longer because you fidgeted" works against it. Third, the break has to be a real break. It is loud, mildly chaotic and entirely child-run, which is to say it is exactly the kind of break the research describes: physical, social, self-organised play that asks nothing of the child's depleted attention and gives everything back to it.
Then the pins go back in the bag, and the child who sits down to dinner or a reading book is a different child from the one who would have been dragged there straight from the sofa.
